There’s something timeless about taking a classic film camera out on a day trip. For this outing along the south coast of Cornwall, wandering through Fowey, Charlestown and Mevagissey, I packed the Canon AE1 Program paired with the Canon FD 35mm f2.8 and loaded with a roll of Fujifilm 400. The grey skies might have put some people off, but they were actually a blessing for film photography, soft, even light with no harsh shadows, letting both camera and film do their work without fuss.
The Canon AE1 Program was released in 1981 as the successor to the original AE1, which had already made waves in the late ’70s by bringing microprocessor controlled exposure to the mainstream. The “Program” update introduced a fully automatic program mode, making it accessible to beginners while still giving enthusiasts full manual control. The Canon FD 35mm f2.8 is a compact, sharp wide angle lens from the FD lineup. A perfect partner for travel and street photography, it offers just enough width to capture landscapes and architecture while still being versatile for everyday shooting. Its size and weight make it an ideal walk around lens, especially for exploring towns and coastal scenery.

The addition of the finger grip attachment makes it even more comfortable as a handheld camera, It is an underrated feature that gives it just the right amount of stability without sacrificing its sleek profile. For wandering through cobbled streets and pausing to capture fleeting moments, it was an absolute joy to use.
Choosing Fujifilm 400 for this outing was the right decision. Fujifilm’s colour negative stocks are known for their vibrant greens and rich blues, ideal for Cornwall’s dramatic coastlines and colourful harbours. On an overcast day, Fujifilm 400 added just enough warmth and contrast to lift the scenes without losing the moody charm of the weather. It’s a forgiving, versatile film that works beautifully in mixed lighting and really shines in outdoor settings.
Overall, shooting with this setup felt effortless. The AE1 Program’s clear viewfinder and straightforward controls made composing shots second nature. The Canon AE1 Program remains a legend for good reason, it’s easy to use, solid in hand and endlessly reliable. Paired with the Canon FD 35mm f2.8, it becomes a perfect travel companion, sharp, compact and versatile. Add with Fujifilm 400, and you’ve got a recipe for photographs that are vibrant, atmospheric and full of character.
